Any driver who has encountered a motorcycle on an Illinois roadway likely knows that such vehicles can be more difficult to spot. As a result, there could be serious motor vehicle accidents involving motorcycles. However, visibility does not appear to have played a role in a recent crash in Illinois.
The incident happened just after 6 a.m. on a day in late September. Reports indicate that a 53-year-old man was headed west on a motorcycle in a rural section of Illinois. Unfortunately, an oncoming sedan driven by a 48-year-old man is said to have crossed into oncoming traffic, causing a head-on collision with the motorcycle.
Although the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet, he suffered injuries described as “potentially life-threatening.” The driver of the sedan, who was uninjured, was cited for improper lane usage. Police are still investigating the accident.
Anyone who has required medical treatment at the hospital is likely aware of the potential costs associated with even minor injuries. The injured Illinois motorcyclist may face a long recovery period and be in need of extensive medical interventions; and, his health care bills in combination with lost wages may leave him in a precarious financial situation. However, victims of motor vehicle accidents caused by another person’s negligence have the option of filing a personal injury lawsuit. If such claims are successfully argued, victims could receive a monetary award to help them manage the financial consequences of their injuries. An attorney with experience with such cases can help victims fully understand their options and choose the most appropriate course of action.
