Motor vehicle accidents: Illinois man killed in moped crash

On Behalf of | Sep 11, 2017 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

People in Illinois often turn to alternative modes of transportation, including mopeds, for a variety of reasons. For example, these options are often cheaper and better for the environment. Unfortunately, people using such methods may be at risk for serious harm if involved in motor vehicle accidents due to their smaller size and relative lack of protections in comparison to more traditional vehicles. For example, a man was recently killed while riding a moped.

The incident that led to the 61-year-old man’s death reportedly happened one morning on a day in September. Reports indicate that the man was waiting to make a left turn. Unfortunately, his moped was allegedly struck behind by a vehicle driven by a 22-year-old woman.

The man was transported to the hospital. Unfortunately, he passed away approximately 40 minutes after the accident occurred due to a fractured neck. Police say that charges will be filed once the investigation has been completed, including receiving toxicology results and reviewing the woman’s cellphone.

Now an Illinois family is left unexpectedly planning the funeral of their loved one, and while the loss of a family members is always difficult, many families experience additional struggles due to the financial ramifications of their loss. Funeral expenses in combination with lost wages are often more than many families are prepared to cope. As a result, many victims of motor vehicle accidents choose to pursue damages in a civil court. If claims of negligence are successfully presented, plaintiffs could receive a monetary award. Such an outcome will likely do little to reduce their grief; however, it could allow them to focus on their recovery rather than their financial obligations.
