Illinois motor vehicle accidents: 2 killed in suspected DUI crash

On Behalf of | May 16, 2017 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Drinking and driving have left many families in Illinois and across the country feeling broken and incomplete. Unfortunately, police believe that alcohol was a factor in a recent crash that resulted in the loss of two lives, as is frequently the case regarding motor vehicle accidents. The alleged driver in the case now faces multiple charges as a result.

The incident reportedly happened during the early morning hours of a day in early May. According to reports, a 23-year-old male lost control of the vehicle he was driving. The car is believed to have crossed over into oncoming traffic before exiting the road, striking a tree stump and overturning.

One of the car’s occupants, a 28-year-old man, was allegedly ejected from the car. He was discovered under the vehicle’s front and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and a second passenger required extrication; the passenger ultimately passed away as a result of injuries suffered in the accident. The driver reportedly admitted that he blacked out prior to the accident. Police say the driver’s blood alcohol content was well over the legal limit at the time of the accident.

The driver faces four felony counts as a result of the crash and could spend a significant time in prison if convicted. In the meantime, the families of the two deceased men are left to come to terms with the news of the unexpected and preventable death. In addition to the grief that comes along with such a loss, the families will also have to deal with funeral expenses and loss of wages, potentially leaving them in a precarious financial situation. To help cope, many victims of motor vehicle accidents in Illinois — including surviving family members in the event of a fatality — file a wrongful death lawsuit. If negligence can be proved — a claim that would be supported by a conviction of criminal charges stemming from an accident — the court could order responsible parties to pay a monetary award to victims.
