Follow these tips to stay safe on winter roads

On Behalf of | Nov 16, 2017 | Blog

Winter driving in the Addison area can be very hazardous. It is bad enough with wet, icy or even snow-covered streets, but when people do not compensate and practice safer driving habits, the roadways become even more dangerous. While the safest thing you can do is to stay home when the weather is bad, sometimes that is not possible.

Whether you are driving to work, school or to attend a special event, there are some things you can do to mitigate your risk. Read further to find out about winter driver tips that can help keep you safe.

Plan ahead

Before you set out, be sure you know what roads you will be driving on and what the weather conditions are. While you might be so familiar with your work commute that you feel like you can do it blindfolded, this may not be true if you plan on taking any long road trips. Map out your route and look at some alternative options in case you encounter any road closures or heavy traffic.

Stay hydrated

When the weather turns cold, you run a higher risk of becoming dehydrated. This, in turn, can lead to drowsiness and a slower response time. The combination of dehydration and icy or wet roads can be fatal. Make sure you are drinking enough water throughout the day and always keep a spare bottle or two in your car. In addition, you should consume enough food to keep your energy up.

Pack a roadside safety kit

Since flat tires like to happen at the most inopportune times, as do other car problems, you should have a roadside emergency kit in your vehicle. The kit should include items such as road flares, a flashlight, batteries, a tow rope, ice scraper, matches and a candle. You should also keep a supply of kitty litter on hand to use for extra traction if you get stuck.

Take it slowly

When driving through snow and ice, it is generally a good idea to drop your speed to at least 50 percent of the posted limit, if not more. However, when you are driving through snow, it is important to keep enough speed so that you keep your momentum when driving on an uphill grade.

Stay calm

Nervousness can increase your chances of an accident. This is because gripping the steering wheel too tightly or hitting the brake too hard, you risk losing control of the car. Stay calm and keep your touch light on your vehicle’s controls.

While the above tips can help keep you safe while navigating the roads in the winter, it may be impossible to avoid an accident with a negligent or reckless driver. If you have been involved in a car accident, you may be able to file a claim for any damages or injuries you suffered as a result.
