For all the benefits a dog may bring a family, owners must take measures to protect others. Because dogs can act unpredictably at times — especially around people with whom they are unfamiliar — owners must ensure that dogs are properly secured or restrained. Unfortunately, one woman was recently hospitalized after suffering dog bites in an attack in Illinois.
The incident happened at an apartment complex. Reports indicate that police were called to the scene one afternoon on a day in October. According to reports, a woman was attacked by a pit bull as she walked through the complex. Police believe that the dog was able to leave a unit as a result of an open screen door.
The woman suffered several injuries in the alleged attack and was sent to the hospital. After caring for the victim, officers were able to locate the dog and the owner. The dog is currently being held by animal control as the incident is being investigated; it is unclear when the investigation to expected to be completed.
Unfortunately, victims of dog bites can often face a long recovery. Not only can they suffer physically, the psychological effects can place a toll in the long term. As a result, many people in Illinois who have been attacked by a dog may choose to file a personal injury lawsuit against the dog’s owner. A successfully presented case can result in a financial award that will ensure that such victims are able to receive the care they need to cope with the harm they suffered in an attack.
